Between the Freedom Tour Collaboration with YMCA of Greater Houston, TWO Youth Law Enforcement Academies, and the Fort Bend Festival of One, we had our hands full with exciting events. Join us down memory lane as we revisit our amazing summer and get a sneak peek into fall 2023!
Youth Spotlight
Congratulations to our Festival of One “Expose Your Excellence” Youth Talent Show contestants! These girls did a phenomenal job showcasing their amazing talent!
The Freedom Tour
Atlanta
The First stop on the freedom tour was Atlanta, Georgia. We began at the Martin Luther King national historic park. Afterwards, we visited Ebenezer Baptist church, had lunch at the CNN center, and ended our Visit at the world famous coca cola world.
Montgomery | Selma
The Next stops were Montgomery and Selma. We visited the Ancient Africa Enslavement & Civil War Museum and The National Voting Rights Museum before we marched the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the same bridge Dr. King marched in 1965.
We ended the day at the Rosa Parks Museum.
Birmingham
In Birmingham, Alabama, we toured the amazing Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Next, we visited the 16th Street Baptist Church that was bombed in 1963 claiming the lives of 4 young girls. This was a day of remembrance and honor for those who lost their lives to hate.
Memphis
Our day began at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, Where dr. king was assassinated. After exploring Beale Street, We ended the day at Stax Museum of American Soul Music and learned about the rich history of Memphis soul music.
Little Rock
Last stop of the Freedom Tour! We visited Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, to learn about the Little Rock Nine.
Did you know that 80 students expressed interest in integrating Central High School before being narrowed down to 9?
Youth Law Enforcement Academy
Due to high interest in last year’s youth law enforcement academy, EEYP hosted two sessions this summer!
This year, we added lessons on juvenile law, crime scene investigation, and courtroom procedures. The academy focused on career exploration and engagement with local police departments in Fort Bend County.
The students enjoyed icebreaker games with officers and learned what the different law enforcement agencies in the county do.
Festival of One
The inaugural Fort Bend County Festival of One took place on Saturday, August 26, at the newly opened Epicenter in Rosenberg, TX. With a remarkable turnout of over 2,500 attendees, the event showcased the vibrant spirit and diversity of the Fort Bend community.
A highlight of the event was the talent contest hosted by the Expose Excellence Youth Program, showcasing talented finalists between the ages of 10 and 17. The winners, Serena Nguyen in the age 10-13 division and Kayli Martin in the age 14-17 division, took home the grand prize of $500 each.
